The Great Beanstalk Race

Following our Jack and the Beanstalk themed week, we transplanted our class beanstalks.  They have both grown so much!  We are having a beanstalk race, who do you think will win?  If you would like to send in photos of your child’s beanstalk from home, please email them to the info box at school and we can add them to our website gallery.

Ascension Day

We celebrated Ascension Day on Friday 23rd May.  This began by a visit to Church of the Ascension to join in with our worship leaders service.  This included some very enthusiastic singing and actions.

Back at school the children shared their talents and hobbies with their friends and teachers.  It was so lovely to see how confident all of our children have become.  They were all so supportive of their friends.  We had gymnasts, footballers, photography, martial arts and singing to name a few of the hobbies and talents.  Take a look at some of our very talented reception children.

Take One Picture

This week saw the launch of the National Gallery’s Take One Picture project.  Throughout the school the children have been introduced to the selected painting ‘A Regatta On The Grand Canal’ by Canaletto.  Over the next few weeks children will create cross curricular works linked to the painting.  We are very excited to see where this project takes us.  There is a possibility that some of our children’s work could be displayed in The National Gallery in London.  Watch this space for updates.  In the meantime take a look at how Reception started their project.

VE Day Celebration

As part of our school VE day celebrations each child was asked to bring a stone to school.  Over the last few days, children painted their stones and today we created a beautiful art installation on the playground to share with our school community.  Tomorrow the stones will be collected to create a VE Day trail around Wall Heath. Take a look at some of the amazing, detailed artwork.  Do you know where your stone is?

Some of our older children reflected on their thoughts and feelings about VE day.

“When I was painting my rock, I was thinking about how we weren’t painting the rocks for us, we are painting them for the community.  It’s like when the soldiers fought for me and the rest of the world”.    Freya

“When we were playing games I thought about how some children had to play in fear of the air raid shelter alarm going off”. Jake C

” While I was playing different games, I thought about how lucky I am to not be in fear; it must have been really hard to think that a German bomber could drop a bomb at any time.  I love running around, having a good time without thinking of running to an air raid shelter”.  Lauren

AHOY ME HEARTIES!

Reception’s Brand New Pirate Ship

Reception are so excited to see their new pirate ship that has been added to our beautiful outdoor learning environment.  We would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful H.S.A who bought this for us.  Pirate day is going to be so much fun!

Thank you H.S.A

Easter Craft Afternoon

Reception had a fantastic afternoon making Easter crafts with a special grown up.

The afternoon began with a fabulous Easter bonnet parade (we had some marvellous creations), followed by a selection of Easter songs.

The children then worked with their grown up to produce 4 different Easter crafts.

The children demonstrated their cutting, sticking, colouring, painting and biscuit making skills and were extremely well behaved. We were all very proud and had a wonderful afternoon of Easter celebrations.

Experience Easter for Reception led by Worship Leaders

A huge well done to our Worship Leaders in Years 5 and 6 for planning and organising an Easter Experience for our youngest children in Reception.  Each group told a part of the Easter story and planned some very creative activities including coin rubbing, plasticine and play people, sticks and even pin the tail on the donkey! Thank you so much to Reception who were so attentive and willing to try everything.  As always, thank you also to Sian, Father Chris and Mother Sarah at Church of Ascension for their time, guidance and enthusiasm!

Farmyard Fun

Today was such an exciting time for Reception ….it was our first school trip!  We visited Ash End House Farm.  The children had an amazing time learning all about baby animals and helped Farmer Jenny and Famer Sarah with all of their jobs.  Take a look at what we got up to.

Fun at Forest School

What a wonderful time Reception have had at our fabulous forest school!  The children were in their element, learning and exploring in the outdoors.  We heard so many children saying “Forest school is the best”.

Another Egg-citing Experiment!

We have been thinking about about farm animals and their young.

We read ‘Rosie’s Walk’ (learning lots of new vocabulary) and watched a programme about how chickens grow. We learned that the eggs our families buy are special and don’t have baby chicks in them.

We talked about all the different types of eggs we have eaten and what they looked like when they were cooked.

We wanted to find out what was inside our egg and what happened when we heated it up. Mrs York tried to break the shell by squeezing it on the top and bottom, but it was stronger than we thought.

She managed to crack the shell by tapping the side of the egg onto a metal frying pan. We could see the yellow egg yolk and a clear jelly… it didn’t look like the eggs we eat!

Mrs York put some tea lights under a frying pan to make it hot and we waited to see what happened.

The clear jelly started to turn white!

What amazing things eggs are… I think it might be fried egg for tea tonight!
