We’re going on a bear hunt!

This week we started our new topic of ‘Stories We Love’. This week we have been reading We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.  The children have been very creative and their writing is something to celebrate.  Here’s a brief snapshot of some of our work.

Blast off!

The children in reception have had an amazing time learning all about space.  They have loved our space role play corner and really impressed us with their moon fact writing.

Forest School Adventures

Today the children in RH had a lovely time at forest school.  They hammered petals and leaves between fabric to make butterflies and flags.  We had some fantastic ladybird hunters and minibeast spotters. The mud kitchen was as popular as ever and digging in the mud pit discovered lots of worms and the odd slug and snail. Everyone made a pizza for Fiona to cook over the fire which we enjoyed with some hot chocolate and a story at the end of a wonderful forest school session.

Thank you to our wonderful Forest school leader Fiona for another memorable session.  It was overheard that “This was the best day ever!!”

Easter Craft Fun

On Wednesday afternoon, the children paraded in their amazing Easter hats and then treated their special grown ups to some wonderful Easter songs.  Afterwards the children worked with their adults to create some amazing artwork.  We spent a lovely afternoon together.

Farm Experience

What a wonderful time we had at Ash End House Farm!  We sang songs about animals, learned the names of baby animals, fed goats, sheep and ducks and collected an egg for supper.  We were very busy farmers.  All the children had a fantastic time and they made their teachers so proud with their super behaviour and manners.  Take a look at a snapshot of our time spent at the farm.

Dinosaur Science Week was totally ROARSOME!!!

This week Reception have celebrated British Science Week with a range of STEM learning activities.

We all looked so smart in our scientist outfits.

We measured dinosaur food.

We predicted if things would float or sink and made a boat to help a baby dinosaur float.

We tested different materials to see if they were waterproof to keep our baby dinos dry.

We used paper to make a bridge over a swamp, that was strong enough to support the weight of a stegasaurus.

On Wednesday afternoon, we learned about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.  We tricked our grown ups by taking home a pretend dino poop!  We sorted dinosaurs into groups  – those that walked on 2 legs and those that walked on 4 legs.

On Thursday we enjoyed a ‘sleepover at the dinosaur museum’ dance session.  The children worked as a small group to make a T-Rex.  Watch out, there were some very gruesome ones!

We learned all about Mary Anning the famous fossil hunter.  The children were enthralled by her life story.

We finished a very busy week off by excavating some dinosaur bones and testing the flight of a ‘Pipette-a-saurus’.

We had a special dinosaur expert come to visit.  The children loved listening to his amazing dinosaur facts.

There was a serious security breach at the end of our week, when Terry the T-Rex was spotted by the CCTV.  Mrs York had left some dinosaur food out!

Mrs Hobson managed to get Terry under control and we used a tally to check all dinosaurs were in their own habitats.

Reception on World Book Day

The children all dressed as their favourite book characters.  We had Snow White, the Highway Rat, Little Red Riding Hood and Matilda to name a few.  Well done everyone, you all looked amazing!

Then it was time for the Big Book Swap.  Everyone got to go home with a new book to read at bedtime.

But a sneak peek first!

Spring has sprung!

Today the children in reception thought about what signs of spring they could find all around our school.  They were fabulous spring detectives.  They spotted lots of clues that tell us that the season of spring is finally here.  Take at look at what they noticed.

When we returned to the classroom, the children created some beautiful snowdrop artwork using pastels.

It has hatched!

It was a toy dinosaur!  The teachers had tricked the children.  We all thought it was very funny.  It is the start of our new mini topic all about prehistoric times.

An Eggciting discovery!!

This afternoon Mrs York found an unusual object in our sand pit.  The children thought it was an egg left by a dinosaur.  They spent the afternoon researching what dinosaur might have laid it and writing posters to let everyone in the school know what has happened.

We will keep a close eye on the situation and keep you all updated!
