Picture book week in 5/6M Bookclub

We have loved bringing in our own picture books and sharing those on this week’s dynamic bookshelf in the reading corner.  Lots of memories and book sharing!

Head teacher’s update

We have all enjoyed the warmer, sunnier weather, here at Church of the Ascension. We continue to be very grateful to the year 5 and 6 pupils who support with positive play at break and lunchtime.

Our week started with a fascinating assembly by Lindsey Brown from New Life Church, who used art to bring a Bible story about forgiveness, to life.  We look forward to Lindsey visiting us again, next term.

A production of ‘Treasure Island’ was a very exciting way to end our week.  We all enjoyed the theatrical performance – thank you to the HSA for funding this Friday afternoon treat.

We had a lot to celebrate again in Praise Assembly, this morning, with many trophies and certificates from home.  It is great to see our children participating in such a variety of activities, out of school.  There was a theme of Perseverance beads being awarded for tackling challenging maths, this morning. It is great to see so many children thinking hard about their work.

A quick reminder that we are all invited to Soul Food on Tuesday 25th March:

Head teacher’s update

It has been another very busy week, at Church of the Ascension.  Our reception pupils have been busy being scientists and hunting down dinosaurs! There were many excellent homework projects from years 5 and 6 to celebrate in Praise Assembly, this morning.  I have learnt a lot about coastal erosion, by reading them.

Thank you to all of those who have responded to the dinner provision survey.  The survey is still open should you still wish to respond –  AIP survey.   I will be meeting with representatives from AIP, next week.

I had the privilege of attending the Dudley School’s  R.E. Debates with 4 pupils from years 5 and 6.  The children were incredibly brave and were the first of the teams to put their motion forward that all schools should teach all religions and faiths in R.E. lessons.  This was opposed by Pedmore Primary School.  We then watched the remaining debates and our children asked some very insightful questions of the other teams. Well done and thank you to the children that represented our school so well.

5/6M Book Club

As part of our wellbeing ‘Take Notice’ theme, we have focussed on the genre of fantasy in today’s book club.  Some children shared their books and recommendations from this genre with lots of enthusiasm.

Head teacher’s message

What a great week we have had.  The Secret Readers, Book Swap and Gift Books were a huge success and we all had a really lovely World Book Day.  It was marvellous to see the whole school reading.  Thank you all for your support with the day and for the donations of books.

Wellbeing Buddies lead our assembly on Thursday, encouraging us all to ‘take notice’.  They encouraged us all to be more present and to make sure that we take notice of the environment around us.  The sun shining this week has certainly helped with that!  Classes have been encouraged to play different types of music and look at different types of art, for us to appreciate.  We look forward to hearing about how children have been ‘taking notice’, at home, as well.

My sincere apologies for the ongoing issues with booking school lunches.  We are working closely with AIP, our catering supplier, to address these.

Just a quick reminder that there are no local elections this year, so school will not be closed.

Wishing you all a very lovely weekend.

Dear family,

Welcome all to our new website! Our new website launched just before the holidays and we are very pleased with how it is coming along. We hope that it will become a useful point of reference for parents and visitors. We are still in the process of adding all of the useful information, so please bear with us while we continue to work on it. Please do feel free to explore and check back regularly to see the updates. Newsletters will now be produced on the website and a link will be sent by text each Friday for you to access them.

It has been a positive start to the new half term.  We have had a very productive and busy week, as you will be able to see from our class pages.  This morning in praise assembly, we celebrated a lot of writing from across the school.  There were also a lot of medals, certificates and badges to celebrate from out of school activities.

Mrs Mason

Litter Picking

After our assembly about God’s wonderful world, some children were inspired to consider ways of how we can look after it.  So, thank you to all our litter pickers, who have given up some of their lunchtime to make a school grounds a tidier place.

Good Health Week 2025

Key Stage One

Year 1 and 2 have taken part in a range of activities for our Good Health Week. We have been lucky enough to have some visitors who have spoken to us about how to keep ourselves safe and the jobs that they do, to keep others safe. We have also discussed how to stay fit and healthy and taken part in some DT, where we made our own healthy sandwiches, and enjoyed eating them too!

We have had talks from:

Nurses, a Midwife, an Occupational Therapist, RNLI and a Mental Health Practitioner.

See the photos of all our fun below!

Year 5 Walk Through The Bible

Well done to our Year 5s for working so hard with David to remember 40 actions and key words from the Old Testament.  We look forward to presenting these to the whole school next week and receiving our certificates and mini book of Bible stories. Thank you to Church of the Ascension for joining in our sessions and funding our books.

Wellbeing Buddies and Church of the Ascension Shoebox Appeal

Our church and school communities joined forces at Christmas to fill and pack shoeboxes for some of the younger members of our community, who currently live in temporary accommodation.  Our Wellbeing Buddies did an amazing job in the church hall selecting the right items for the right ages and packing them up.  It was lovely to hear one of our buddies say, “It makes me feel good doing something for someone else.  It makes me feel warm inside”.
