National Writing Day

Bring an Object, Bring a Story!       24th June 2026

To celebrate National Writing Day, we are inviting every child to bring a small object from home that is special, meaningful or interesting to them.

The object could be anything from a favourite toy, a photograph, a souvenir from a holiday, a treasured gift, a sports medal, a book or even an everyday item that has a story behind it.

Why are we doing this?

Great writing begins with great ideas, and personal experiences often provide the best inspiration. By bringing in an object that matters to them, children will have a real-life stimulus to spark their imagination and help them develop their writing. They may choose to write about a memory connected to the object, imagine the adventures it has had or even create a completely new story inspired by it.

We would love families to be part of this experience. Before the day, spend a few minutes talking with your child about their chosen object. You might discuss:

  • Why it is special to them.
  • Where it came from.
  • Any memories linked to it.
  • What stories it might tell if it could speak.
  • What adventures it may have had before it arrived in your home.

These conversations can help children build confidence and generate exciting ideas before they begin writing. Please ensure that any objects brought into school are clearly named and are not particularly valuable, fragile or irreplaceable.

We are looking forward to celebrating the wonderful stories that emerge from these treasured objects and showing children that every item has a story waiting to be told!
