Year 1 & 2 Science

This week in Science, our Year 1 and 2 children explored the question: “Which direction is the sun?”

To help answer this, we took our learning outdoors! The children observed their own shadows and noticed how these changed depending on where they stood in relation to the sun. They discovered that shadows are always formed on the opposite side of the sun, helping them understand its position in the sky.

We also had a thoughtful discussion about how daylight changes throughout the year. The children learned that the length of the day varies with the seasons, with winter having the shortest amount of daylight and summer having the longest.

It was wonderful to see the children working scientifically—observing, questioning, and making connections to the world around them. Well done, everyone!

Art in Year 1 and 2.

Our Year 1 and 2 children have been busy developing their artistic skills in their recent art lessons! This week they have been focusing on using line and shape to carefully sketch their very own penguins.

The children showed great concentration as they thought about how to create different shapes to build their drawings. They also began exploring shading techniques, learning how to add depth and texture to make their penguins look more realistic.

We are so proud of the effort and creativity the children have shown. Their finished artwork looks fantastic, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as young artists!

Well done, everyone!

Year 1 and 2 Reading for Pleasure in the Sunshine!

This week, our Year 1 and Year 2 children have been making the most of the beautiful weather by taking their books outdoors during lunchtimes and breaktimes. It has been wonderful to see so many pupils choosing to spend a quiet moment in the sunshine, enjoying stories, sharing books with friends, and discovering new favourites.

Encouraging a love of reading is something we value deeply, and the children have shown just how much joy a good book can bring!

We’re proud of their enthusiasm and delighted to see reading for pleasure becoming such a natural part of their day.

Funtime Friday

This afternoon, our children thoroughly enjoyed Funtime Friday, where they got to choose from a range of engaging activities linked to our learning from the week. These sessions give pupils the chance to revisit key skills in a fun, creative and child‑led way

This week, one of the popular choices was a geography activity focused on developing knowledge of the world. Children confidently practised naming the continents and oceans, reinforcing their understanding through hands-on and interactive tasks.

Another favourite was our art activity, where pupils worked on sketching skills, exploring the difference between hard and soft lines. The children showed great concentration and creativity as they experimented with pencil control and observation.

We also included activities designed to strengthen fine motor skills, math activities to consolidate learning on fractions and the children had access to children’s bibles to explore a range of stories and apply their reading skills.

Funtime Fridays are a wonderful opportunity for children to take ownership of their learning, build confidence, and enjoy applying their skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. It has been lovely to see such enthusiasm and engagement across the classroom!

Easter Celebrations in Year 1 and Year 2

This week, our Year 1 and Year 2 children have been busy enjoying a range of wonderful Easter celebrations!

One of the highlights of the week was our Easter Bonnet Parade. The children proudly wore their beautifully crafted bonnets—complete with flowers, chicks, ribbons, and lots of sparkles—and showed them off in a joyful parade. It was fantastic to see their imaginations shine, and the smiles on their faces were priceless!

We also enjoyed a special Easter service at the church, where the children joined together in song, reflection, and celebration. Their behaviour was exemplary, and they listened carefully as we learned about the meaning of Easter and the importance of kindness and new beginnings.

It has been a truly lovely week filled with creativity, community, and celebration. Well done to all our Year 1 and Year 2 children for their enthusiasm and hard work!

We wish all our families a happy and peaceful Easter. 🐣🌷
