Head teacher’s update

Thank you for a fabulous year that has been full of great memories.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as head teacher at Church of the Ascension and am very grateful for the welcome and support that I have received. Looking back through the events that are posted on this website, remind us of all that we have enjoyed and achieved, over the year. Year 6 have done us proud with a fabulous production, brilliant behaviour on their trip to Baggeridge and a very touching Leaver’s Service, today.  Wishing our Year 6 pupils all the very best in their next steps – we look forward to hearing all about your future successes.

I hope that you all have a very lovely summer holidays and look forward to seeing you all when the children return on Wednesday 8th September.  All holiday and INSET dates are now on the calendar. Other dates will be confirmed on our return, in the Autumn term.

Collective worship

Our thanks go to Father Chris who led a very thought provoking act of worship this week.  Our assembly was all about transitions and about the feelings we may be experiencing at the end of one academic year and before the start of another.  Father Chris encouraged us to be mindful of our feelings and to acknowledge that we might have a whole mixture of emotions.  Father Chris reminded us of how we can spend some time with our own thoughts and feelings, and if we so choose can share how we are feeling with Jesus.

Wellbeing Buddies 2025-26

Well done to all 52 of the wonderful Key Stage 2 children who applied to be a wellbeing buddy for next year! Unfortunately, we couldn’t choose you all but all of us have an important role to play in our wellbeing.

Archbishop’s Award

On Thursday 10th July, we were delighted to welcome Bishop Martin, Bishop Of Dudley, to school to present 11 of our pupils with the Archbishops” Young Leaders awards.

The Archbishops’ Young Leaders Award exists to see a generation of young people empowered to transform society. The award uses partnerships between schools, churches and the local community to offer opportunities for young people to grow in leadership, faith and character.

They completed different team building and volunteering challenges and spent time thinking about leaders and the qualities they possess, particularly looking at Jesus. The worship leaders also led reception children in an Easter experience event, planning and delivering the activities, sharing their knowledge and demonstrating leadership qualities.

On giving out the awards, Bishop Martin said: “These are the first Archbishop Young Leaders Awards presented in the Diocese and it is very exciting that I am able to award them in one of our Dudley schools.”

We are incredibly proud of our Young Leaders and very grateful for their hard work and dedication to school, church and our wider community.

A Fond Farewell to Our Year 2s!

As the school year comes to an end, we would like to say a heartfelt goodbye to our fantastic Year 2 children as they get ready to begin their exciting journey into Key Stage 2.

It has been an absolute pleasure teaching all the children in Key Stage 1 this year. Together, we’ve embarked on an incredible learning adventure — from discovering our capital city, London, to stepping back in time to learn about the Gunpowder Plot and the Great Fire of London. Our visit to Cadbury World and learning about Bournville brought chocolatey history to life, and we were inspired by the work and values of Mahatma Gandhi.

In Design and Technology, the children showed creativity and teamwork as they built timber-framed houses, and in Art, they impressed us with beautifully crafted clay elephants and glowing diva lamps. In Science, we explored everyday materials and investigated how and why the Great Fire of London spread so quickly.

our curriculum has been brought to life with a range of exciting enhanced learning experiences that have made learning truly memorable for our Key Stage 1 children.

Our visit to Cadbury World gave us a delicious insight into the history of chocolate and the story behind Bournville Village, linking beautifully with our learning about local history and the wider world. The children were fascinated to learn how chocolate is made – and, of course, loved the chance to taste some too!

We were captivated by the Trunk Theatre’s Great Fire of London performance, which transported us back to 1666. The engaging show helped children understand the causes and impact of the fire in a fun, theatrical way — a fantastic addition to our history topic.

The Treasure Island theatre show had everyone hooked with its swashbuckling characters and adventurous storyline. It was a great way to inspire imagination, story writing, and creative thinking in the classroom.

Our India Day celebrations were another unforgettable highlight. The children immersed themselves in Indian culture through music, dance, art, and food, and deepened their understanding of diversity and the life and values of inspirational leaders like Mahatma Gandhi.

These experiences have not only enriched our topics but have also built confidence, curiosity, and lasting memories. We are so proud of how the children embraced every opportunity with such enthusiasm!

We are so proud of how much each child has grown — in confidence, curiosity, and independence. We will miss their enthusiasm, laughter, and big ideas, but we know they are ready for the new challenges and opportunities that Key Stage 2 will bring.

Thank you, Year 2 — you’ve been amazing. Good luck and keep shining! We look forward to continuing to work with Year 1 next academic year.

Ship Ahoy!

Tuesday 15th July

Today we celebrated the end of our fabulous topic Ship Ahoy!  All of the children looked amazing in their pirate outfits.  The children had to complete 3 pirate training challenges:

Make a fearsome wanted poster

Complete a pirate obstacle course including walking the plank!

Go on a treasure hunt to find golden coins that total 5

Each activity was awarded with a pirate crystal which the children exchanged for a certificate and ice pop at the end of the day.

Well done me hearties!
