Head teacher’s update

It has been another very busy week, at Church of the Ascension.  Our reception pupils have been busy being scientists and hunting down dinosaurs! There were many excellent homework projects from years 5 and 6 to celebrate in Praise Assembly, this morning.  I have learnt a lot about coastal erosion, by reading them.

Thank you to all of those who have responded to the dinner provision survey.  The survey is still open should you still wish to respond –  AIP survey.   I will be meeting with representatives from AIP, next week.

I had the privilege of attending the Dudley School’s  R.E. Debates with 4 pupils from years 5 and 6.  The children were incredibly brave and were the first of the teams to put their motion forward that all schools should teach all religions and faiths in R.E. lessons.  This was opposed by Pedmore Primary School.  We then watched the remaining debates and our children asked some very insightful questions of the other teams. Well done and thank you to the children that represented our school so well.

Collective Worship w/b 10.3.25

This week’s focus for Collective Worship was The Fruit of the Spirit, Kindness.  Children were tasked with reflecting on what the value of kindness is and whether there is any difference between being kind and being nice.  Class teachers were very impressed by the thoughtful responses.  We used the story of Joseph and his dreams (Genesis 37) as an example from the Bible.

British Science Week in Years 5 and 6

We have launched a science invention challenge in Years 5 and 6 to celebrate British Science Week.  What can we do to improve the air quality of a particular area within our part of the school? Entries for this competition need to be submitted by Thursday 27th March. (A copy of the information given to the children can be accessed in the Letters Home section of our website in Parents’ Area). Good luck!

Year 5 & 6 Gymnastics

Please note there will be no gymnastics after school on Friday 21st March as there is a netball match instead.

British Science Week – KS1

First we joined the family on a farm walk to help look after all their animals and learn about all the ways they fight climate change on the farm. Then we took some of the produce from their vegetable garden to join Tom the food-waste fighting chef in his kitchen to whip up a delicious, seasonal, zero-waste delight!

Throughout the lesson we earned the following badges:

Biodiversity buddy: learning about all the ways our Change Champion family encourage biodiversity on their farm and learning some practical ways we can join in with this change at home and school.

Energy Expert: learning about all the ways our Change Champion family create their own sustainable energy and learning some practical ways we can join in with this change at home and school.

Waste Warrior: learning about all the ways our Change Champion family recycle the waste on their farm, joining Tom the food waste fighting chef to learn how about zero waste cooking and learning some practical ways we can reduce waste at home and school.

5/6M Book Club

As part of our wellbeing ‘Take Notice’ theme, we have focussed on the genre of fantasy in today’s book club.  Some children shared their books and recommendations from this genre with lots of enthusiasm.

5CS Geography projects

What a fantastic set of projects! Well done 5CS!

Dinosaur Science Week…Roar!

The children have really enjoyed being scientists this week. They dressed in their lab coats, lanyards and goggles and were keen to complete some dinosaur experiments!

We began the week by measuring dinosaur food ready for some dinosaur hunting. Like all good scientists we were very careful when we recorded our results.

We investigated floating and sinking and tested whether we could make a toy dinosaur float.

We worked in teams to make a bridge over a swamp.  It had to be strong enough to hold a dinosaur for 30 seconds.  We only had scissors, tape and pieces of paper.  We learned that we could make strong cylinders and triangles from our paper.

We tested different materials to discover which one would keep our tiny dinosaurs dry.  We found out that the foil was waterproof.

Just like real scientists, we investigated dinosaur poop to find out what they ate.  We could tell if the dinosaur was a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore.  We made our very own pretend poop to trick our grown ups!

We sorted dinosaurs according to how many legs they walked on.  Most two legged dinosaurs were predators.  The small ones hunted in packs.

We all became palaeontologists and excavated a dinosaur skeleton!

We studied the Pterosaurs and made our own flying ‘Pipette-osaurus’!

Unfortunately, at the end of our dinosaur science week, we had a security breach! The dinosaurs from ‘Jurassic Park’ had escaped – one was filmed looking for food in Mrs York’s classroom!

But don’t panic! Mrs Hobson-o-saurus came to save the day and led us on a dinosaur hunt around school. Thankfully, we managed to find all of the missing dinosaurs.

We have had a fabulous time being scientists!

Year 5 & 6 Netball Match

Congratulations to our netball team on their 8 – 1 victory against Glynne Primary on Tuesday. A great team performance!
