This half term, our KS1 children have been enjoying their Geography learning as they explore the question:
“How is Birmingham different from where we live?”
So far, the children have been busy developing their map skills, learning about human and physical features, and comparing our local area with the city of Birmingham. They have discovered that Birmingham is much larger than our local community and offers many different landmarks, transport links, shops, and places of interest.
The children have enjoyed looking at maps, photographs and aerial views to spot similarities and differences, thinking carefully about what makes a city different from a town or village.
We have been incredibly impressed with the children’s curiosity and enthusiasm during this unit. They have asked thoughtful questions and have worked hard to compare the environments we live in with those found in Birmingham.
As we continue our learning after half term, families may wish to support their child’s geography learning by visiting Birmingham during a weekend or school holiday. Exploring places such as the city centre, canals, parks, museums, markets or transport hubs can help children make meaningful connections between their classroom learning and the real world. Of course, this is entirely optional, and we will provide all of the learning experiences needed in school.
We look forward to sharing more of the children’s fantastic geography work as the unit progresses!
